This incredible early footage shows Bowie and The Spiders during their first tour of the UK

This amazing footage of David Bowie and the Spiders performing ‘Ziggy Stardust’ was captured in Dunstable during their first tour of the United Kingdom on 21 June 1972.

It shows Bowie resplendent in the same Freddi Buretti designed multi-coloured jumpsuit that he wore on the famous Top Of The Pops performance two weeks later to promote the single ‘Starman‘.

Bowie had Freddi Burretti make this copy of Elvis Presley’s white jumpsuit and would change into it for his finale song ‘Rock n Roll Suicide’

Bowie and the Spiders were supported by the Flamin’ Groovies for the gig, which was promoted as A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Dunstable.

The album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders and Mars’ had been released just two weeks earlier, on 6 June 1972. The album and tour gave rise to full scale Bowie-mania, with an army of fans going on to imitate his Ziggy style.
