On 20 October 2001 David Bowie opened the epic benefit concert for the World Trade Centre tragedy at Madison Square Garden with Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘America‘.
“I was looking for something which really evoked feelings of bewilderment and uncertainty,” Bowie later explained, “because for me that’s how that period really felt. And I really thought that Paul Simon’s song in this new context really captured that.”
Bowie’s performance of ‘”Heroes“‘ understandably earned one of the strongest ovations on the night – with numerous NYPD and NYFD in attendance, the song’s lyrics made it an obvious choice.
In 2002 Bowie reprised ‘America’, this time at a charity auction on behalf of the Robin Hood Foundation.
