Promo video for David Bowie’s ‘Life On Mars’

The Mick Rock directed promo filmed in Ladbroke Grove on 13 June 1973

Mick Rock filmed and directed the promotional video for ‘Life On Mars‘ backstage at the Blandford West Ten Studio in Ladbroke Grove on 13 June 1973 to accompany the release of the song as a single just nine days later. It features a heavily made-up Bowie performing the song solo against a white backdrop, in a turquoise “ice-blue” suit designed by Freddi Buretti.

“It wasn’t so much as an idea but a moment in time,” director Mick Rock has since explained. “I wanted to do something that looked a little bit like a painting.”

Bowie later remarked that Rock “burnt the colours right out so that it had a strange, floaty art-pop effect.”

Released as a single on 22 June 1973, ‘Life On Mars’ reached #3 in the UK and stayed on the chart for thirteen weeks.
